On Thursday I headed up to Mammoth Lakes, CA for a weekend of adventure. I built many camp fires, ate real well, did a day of lift served mountain biking, played a round of disc golf, and did some hiking. It was only three nights but certainly felt like a real vacation! I woke up around 5am each day to the early dawn and got the most out of every day.

Somehow I didn’t breakt my bike and actually had fun. Even did some small jumps on one of the easier trails. A hard tail certainly looks out of place in a bike Park but all that matters is I had fun safely. There were some hour+ long downhill runs so it was pretty epic! Also definitely needed a shower when I got home. Holy shit was I dirty after that long in the woods. Saw a couple bears in the campground too so I had the full experience.

Devil’s Postpile? It’s been a while. I’m glad you had a good time. Missus and I took the tent trailer on a 50-mile shakedown cruise this morning getting ready to drive to northern Utah for my daughter’s impending birth spasm.

Ooh your camping cooking looks leagues ahead of mine. Where do you get recipes or...? How does one even bring beef like that along?

Disc golf in the middle of trees? That’s a challenge.

Looks like a fun vacation!

Yup Devils Postpile was neat! My first time there. Was wayyyy too crowded even though I went early. Even without COVID I would have been bothered by the people. But at least I was able to distance from everybody and not too many tight spaces to avoid.

Well when you are car camping, its easy to bring anything you want lol. Not to mention I had internet access the whole time as well. But I didnt follow any recipes, just made some stuff ive made before. The tinfoil surprise is a thing I learned from a boyscout trip I went on (not a boyscout but went along for my fraternity in college). That is just potato, carrot, bell pepper, onion, tomato, and ground beef with spices and wrapped up and thrown at the bottom of the fire like a hot coal for about 20 minutes. The steak was easy to cook with a grate provided at the campsite.

Every damn hole was like that!! It was definitely a challenge. I kind of wished for some variety though, with the full course treed in like that, it kind of got repetitive. Thankfully the trees provided much needed shade though since it was upper 80s at the ~8k  foot altitude there. I managed to end the course with two birdies and four bogies, so it was a good +2 overall. Even managed to get par on the par 4 which was tough to pull off.

They should give you -1 if you bank it in off a tree on the put.

Thos e pice look amazing! Also probably the prettiest location for a disc golf course I’ve seen.

Like you I'm always surprised how filthy I get a couple days away from civilization. I took a three day float trip years ago and when I got home I looked like I'd been gone for a month.

It’s incredible how filthy I can get from one day of mountain biking. Now add to that three nights of sleeping in the dirt, 7 campfires, multiple hikes, and no running water to wash off with. At least I changed clothes every day unlike backpacking so it’s all relative! Plus I did lysol wipe baths each day and used enough hand sanitizer to burn my hands off.

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but you didn’t.

Survive that is.

Sorry.

Nice pics tho.

Yeah gotta wait 14 days to find out if I got the modern day plague. Today was sketchy, that’s how I knew I was hiking around  tourists, not hikers. I'm doomed! I was wearing a mask but much good that does for me..
